Some German Words and How I Learned Them

Having lived for multiple stretches of time in Berlin, I’m now fluent in German. But when I first became tentatively fluent, for a brief and intensely strange period I recalled exactly under what circumstances I learned each word – the backstory of vocabulary in miniature.
